RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
