This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
